Feedback questionnaire

We decided to create a feedback questionnaire in which we would hand out to a variety of people who had seen our final edited version of our animation. We asked seven questions overall which were:
What is your gender?
What is your age?
Did you enjoy watching the advert? Please list your reasons as well.
Do you think it is suitbale for Teenage Cancer Trust? Please list why.
What do you think we could change in our advert?
Do you think our idea is creative for out charity? If yes please list why.
What do you think of our set design for our advert?

The majority of our feedback was positive which showed us that our animation for our advert was successful. We did receive some feedback which would help us improve our advert if were able to this again, if we were able to re do our animation we would add in a voice over which would make this more appealing, we were also told that it would be a good idea to re-create the logo with the moving pieces. Overall i am very pleased with the feedback in which we received for our advert for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Annotated Screen Grabs of edit

When beginning our editing stage of our animation we firstly begun by discussing what we wanted to edit in our animation and how this would affect our advert. We started off by importing the folder from the desktop which contained all our images which we had taken of the animation.

Once the folder had imported we then had to drag all  of the 200 photos onto our timeline. We simply did this by selecting all the photos and dragging them to the timeline, we just had to check to make sure all the photos
were in order. We then had to change the speed of our clips from 00.00.01 to 00.00.05. To make sure
all the clips were the same speed we simply selected
all the clips and changed the speed.

Once all the clips were changed correctly we then added a soundtrack. We all came to the agreement to use 'Fix You' by Coldplay. Once we had
uploaded the soundtrack to our timeline we simply had to cut it to the length of our animation
which was 30 seconds.

The final part of our editing was adding credits/text in to our final clip. We chose to add text just to show who the animation had been produced and edited by, this text consisted of saying ' By Ryan O'shea, Kristie Bird and Megan Harcombe.'

I feel that overall our editing of animation has been completed to a high professional standard, meaning that our sound and clips have been cut accurately and our animation flows very smoothly.

Charity research

TEENAGE CANCER TRUST.

We were inspired by some of the videos we saw on the Teenage Cancer Trust website. These were created by people who have been effected by cancer over the years.

Teenage Cancer Trust's target audience mainly applies towards teenagers. Its a large charity which set up events throughout the year to raise money for the charity, this money then goes on to be put into finding research about a cure for cancer. Although the trust is based around teenagers I also feel that this  can relate to any age

Evaluative commentary

Our first ideas were just to film James working out in the gym and speaking about his illness and how it effected his life and career, however we found that the idea wasn't strong enough and wouldn't interest our audience enough. We then found out that James was taking party in a charity workout event for 'Save the Children' foundation, this gave myself and Ryan the idea to film a pre talk with James before him taking out in the workout and then an after talk. We also included shots of James and other people taking part in the workout, this made our documentary seem more interesting and entertaining.
We used two cameras to film our documentary to make it more interesting for our viewers so that we could change from one angle to another, we also added in short clips of James working out to our documentary to make it more entertaining as well as just listening to James answer our questions which we had prepared for him and talking about his life. We also thought it would be a good idea to add an interview into our documentary, we interviewed Camilla from 'Save the Children' this would give our audience a more detailed description of what the charity is about and what the money James has raised for them is going towards. We also added titles to this part of our documentary explaining how much money they need to be able to buy certain things. To conclude my final production overall i am very pleased with our documentary. A long the way i have learnt how to fully use final cut and add short clips as well as titles throughout my documentary. I also so how to add in a voice over over the top of some of my previously filmed footage. I also learnt a lot about the charity itself and how James has helped.

Legal and Ethical Issues

Slander: When a person has made a statement that is untrue and could/has harm/ed another persons reputation.

Libel: Where a person has published a work that is false causing harm to another person or their reputation.

Slanderous examples:

Living with Michael Jackson'  presented by Martin Bashir, it is unethical because Michael Jackson had agreed to an eight-month long interviewing process with Martin Bashir, hoping to educate his fans about many mistaken assumptions his life. When Michael Jackson saw the finished product of "Living With Michael Jackson" on the air, he realized that Martin Bashir had betrayed his trust in order to produce a obscene thriller that just made more puzzling questions for Michael Jackson instead of him answering his questions for the public. The real dispute hung around a young 13-year old boy who Bashir interviewed without his mothers acknowledgement and within this interview Bashir asked irrelevant questions that made Michael Jackson look perverted, for example: Bashir asked, if Gavin Arvizo (13-year old boy) had ever slept in Michael Jackson's bedroom.

Another example of a documentry that has been accused of being slanderous is "fahrenheit 911". Michael moore created another controversial documentary. this documentary was accused on many occasions of being slanderous by a variety of people that described that what he was saying and displayed on the documentary made george bush look like he was part of the 911, he went to evade iraq because he wanted to win power to all the oil that country has. in the documentary he portrays george bush to be a liar and a fake person. he basically criticizes everythng that george has ever said and basically calls him a liar. so in a way Michael moore has portrayed to the public a different view on george bush and Michael caused allot of controversy just because of this documentary, allot of people
started to look at george bush in a different way.

Ethics are a very important and serious thing when it comes to documenting, ethnics is an arrangement of morals within different cultures, and within a documentary they have to respect these different cultures and morals, or the documentary would be classed as unethically correct.

Ethical examples:

For example, the Jimmy Saville case of him being an alleged Pedophile, this is unethical because the makers of the documentary didn't take into consideration that his family and his victims would be dramatically affected by it, because Jimmy Saville is dead now and all the attention and focus goes onto his family and victims. This is unethical, the producers of the documentary done it all for an affect and didn't look forward foreseeing the potential damage it could cause thats why its is unethical.

Another documentary that is potentially unethical is "Cry wolf". This documentary explores and investigates the controversial decision that the Alberta's government have ignored. they have ignored the threat that the rapid industrial expansion is the alberta tar sands region has caused on its surrounds environment and communities. instead of resolving the problem the government insisted on killing thousands of innocent wolves, they did this so that in the public eye they appear to be doing something to save the dwindling woodland population and wildlife. the interviews with the "experts" in the documentary  prove the myth of Canada's "ethnical oil" is further exposed as oil industry greenwashing. to me this documentary is very unethical as they are under-minding the public telling them lies and trying to prove they are "apparently" doing something to protect the surround environment, where as they are actually doing nothing at all just killing the innocent wildlife that is still living there, it is argued that they have done this to hide the fact that this oil industry is causing a number of problems with local communities and the harm it is doing to the wildlife that lives around this industry.

mise en scene

Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene in our interview consisted of being in a small box room located in the Virgin active gym which included a red sofa in which James sat, for the interview the use of the red sofa related back to symbolise the Virgin logo. Surrounding the room was cupboards and a small fridge as this was one of the small staff rooms at the gym, in the background there is a small kitchen area including, a cheap looking bin and a microwave on top of a small worktop.
Behind James on the wall were painted hand prints of all the staff who have currently or still worked at Virgin Active gym. I don't feel that the paintwork looked as professional, however we didn't really have much choice as our original location which we chose was being used for personal training class.

As the location and the surroundings of James throughout our interview were very informal, i felt that this made our interview with James very relaxed and a very informal interview rather than if we were in an office room filming this is because James is sat on a sofa which would be very comfortable for him and would help him to relax a lot more, also because we are filming in James's environment it also gave him an opportunity to completely be himself rather than putting on a bit of an act in front of the camera . I felt that it was more of a casual conversation rather than a formal interview with James.

The lighting we used was very minimalistic and was just used from the celling lights already in the room. This was very useful as we did not have to add any extra lighting to our interview.

Presentation feedback

Myself Ryan and Megan presented our presentation to the rest of our classmates.
The majority of our feedback which we received was really good apart from some feedback which wasn't nesssocery bad but just gave us some help towards planning our interview. I believe that our presentation went  very well, we all took a section from the presentation to speak about, we all spoke in a loud clear manner and used hand gestures to explain as well. Our idea for our interview is realistic and very easy achievable. From our feedback we was told that our purpose was clear and understandable and explained in much detail, this to me showed that our presentation was very successful. Our feedback also told us that we had a good selection of questions to ask James, in which people were looking forward to hearing his response to such as 'How have you coped being blind'? and  'Do you have any life goals'? I feel that our idea is very unique and we could produce a great interview with our chosen idea. Our only downfall on our presentation feedback was that we did not include the location of our interview so people we unsure of where we would be filming this, apart from that overall our feedback was very positive and we could tell people were interested for our chosen topic.

Editorial decisions for interview

Editorial Decisions

In our stages of editing our interview, we simply put our footage from our two cameras onto the time line on final cut and then cut from one camera to another to show that we had taken different shots throughout our interview. We had a variety of shots which consisted of over views, close ups, cross fade and many more. Our reason for editing our interview was so that we didn't have any long or awkward pauses through out interview and so that in ran smoothly. We also covered some of cuts by using the razor blade tool, which allowed us to have no obvious cuts.

We included sound to the begging and end of our interview for a number of reasons. The reason we added sound at the start of our interview was firstly so it would draw peoples attention to watching our interview.  We feel that not only would it make our interview look professional but it is a very good way to start an interview.
We also thought it would be a good idea to add the same sound track to the end of our interview to signal that it had finished. This also was the sound in which our credits and titles would appear over.

We included three titles in our interview.
The first title was to introduce people to the interview the title said "James O' Dricoll "My Life" ". this title was to tell people the name of the person being interviewed and to also give them an insight to what the interview is based around which is james life so we included the title "my life" in the opening title as well.

The second title was at the end of the interview before the last title this title said
" Many thanks to James O' Driscoll and to Virgin Active Health Club". I included this title at the end to show our appreciation to not only Virgin Active health club for letting us use the facility of there health club on Bath Road in Bickley, but to thank James for allowing us to interview him about his life and career.

The third title we had was right at the end of the interview, this title consisted of
" By Ryan O' Shea, Megan harcombe, Kristie Bird" we included this as we believed all professional interviews  have credits at the end telling the audience who created the interview, in this case it was three people. I  personally believe that this title is very important to include as it tells the people that this is the end of the interview.

To the left of this text is an image, this image shows an example of where i decided to cut the sound. I decided to cut the sound so that this section wasn't so boring. James drifted off the question that i asked him so i decided to cut the answer short after a specific word/sentence, i did this as it  wouldn't make it obvious that i had cut his answer short. i then simply switched to the camera view that was a close up of james face, i simply dragged the camera view across so that it looked as though we was simply changing camera view, not where i had cut the sound.  I did this throughout the editing stage of this interview.

Interview evaluation

Interview Evaluation

Overall I am really pleased with our interview. I feel that it is appropriate and entertaining to a wide variety of people. Are interview is mainly based around James and his life of being the only blind personal trainer, not only is this an interesting subject but it also gives people an opportunity to see how James copes and about himself of a day to day basis working at a personal trainer and Virgin Active gym in Bromley.
We used two cameras to film our interview to make it more interesting for our viewers so that we could change from one angle to another, we also added in short clips of James working out to our interview to make it more entertaining as well as just listening to James answer our questions which we had prepared for him.
I was very pleased overall that James responded to our questions well and always gave us a lot of detail in his answers, this made myself and Ryan also feel very confident to ask him other questions which we thought of at the time rather than just the question we had prepared. James was willing for us to ask him  any questions what we came up with and could cross any sort of subjects about his personal life, career, future goals and what he has found difficult over the years.
When going to film part of interview on a day in which we had set, James unfortunately couldn't get back from London in time due to diversions of london transport, this wasn't done intentionally so myself and Ryan had to re schedule for the next day, unfortunately i was going to see my nan in hospital so i was unable to make it, however Ryan said it would be fine for him to set up and film the interview which i was very thankful for.
Overall I am very pleased with our interview and have enjoyed working and editing on our interview together as a team with Ryan.

I have a handful of questions in which we asked James that we thought were good and bad questions.

My first question that I feel was not our best was ' What does it feel like to be a celebrity'?
The reason why i feel that this was one of our weaker questions was because James was a bit unsure of what to answer, there was a bit of a long pause and as he didn't really class himself as a celebrity he sort of gave us a one word answer which wasn't really the response we wanted. Apart from this question all of our other responces were brilliant! One of our best questions we asked were 'Will you ever let being blind stop you from doing anything'? Myself and Ryan could not believe the amount of depth that James went into about this questions. Another question in which we received a great response was,
'Do you think your daughter has been effected in anyway growing up by her father being blind'?
This was one of our strongest questions in which we asked James, this question was very emotional for James to answer, this will make our audience watching our interview see how hard it is for those who have children and who have a terminal unexpected illness like James. A question in which i felt would inspire people watching our interview was 'Have you set yourself any life goals'? James went into a lot of detail in telling us that anyone can achieve what they want if they put their mind to it, i feel that by James saying this it will give people who are watching our interview a chance to succeed in anything that they want to do in life.

Production log for interview

Production Log

09/02/2013 This was our first meet with james. This was a very successful meet as james agreed to be interviewed by us. The down fall that we had from this meet was that james had no secure dates that he could offer us to film this interview but gave us his number so that we could contact him during the week to see when he next have an available slot at the gym where he isn't personal training.

16/02/2013 This was our second meet with james. This meet consisted of us talking through with james how our interview will go and the type of questions that he wouldn't mind being asked. james' response was really good as he didn't mind us asking him anything, this allowed us to come up with many interesting questions that will make our interview interesting and entertaining.

02/03/2013 This was our third meet with james. This meet consisted of filming part of our interview and to film james working out. This was a successful meet as we managed to get part of our interview and we managed to film james working out. The down fall to this meeting is that we didn't film our whole interview meaning that our lighting and sound will be different in each interview it will be very hard to edit the sounds together.

23/03/2013 This was our forth and final meet with james. This meet consisted of us filming the rest of our interview. it was a very successful meeting as we managed to film a very entertaining interview. it was successful as i managed to set up two camera and managed to ask him questions at the same time which to me is a massive achievement.

Location for interview

Location Recce

As our interview was based around James and his personal trainer life, we thought that it would be a perfect idea to film the interview in the Virgin active gym located in bromley. This would be a good idea as well because this is where James spends most of his life working as a personal trainer.

There are a number of places at the gym in which we could choose where to film our interview, but we can to a final decision to film our interview in the glass box room located on the second floor of the gym above the swimming pool and spa area. After viewing our chosen location in the gym to film our interview, we realized that it was really loud and noisy from the other people using the gym. To overcome this we needed to set a date where we would be able to block off this section of the gym to film our final interview, otherwise there would be disruptive noise throughout our interview which would no be professional.

Overall i feel that we made a brilliant choice for deciding to film our interview here.

Concept pitch

Concept Pitch

We pitched our final idea explaining to our class mates and teacher how we would make our advert appealing and entertaining for our target audience.
We presented our idea via a powerpoint in which we covered many topics such as, our chosen charity, what we want to happen in our advert, who our advert is targeted at and many more.

Our chosen charity is Teenage Cancer Trust. We chose this charity not going because it is many aimed at people my own age, but also because i am surrounded by people effected by cancer in some way or form everyday in a day to day basis. I also think it is very important how we can help people learn about preventing cancer and raising money for research. We used the cancer trust website to look at the information that have to give on the charity.

I feel that this was very useful for us a group as we received some positive and negative feedback for our idea for our advert. We were told our advert needs spicing up to make it more appealing, by this we thought we could add color and text to brighten it up a bit so it didn't look as bland.
As our idea was inspired by an advert already using flip-cards, we thought it would be a good idea to introduce hands as this would be more entertaining and professional.
We also thought it would look a lot more precise when positioning our flip-cards for our animation.

Once again by pitching our final idea and receiving feedback really helped us to up our final idea and produce a brilliant advert for our charity.

Proposal

Idea

Our idea is for our advert to contain the Teenage Cancer Trust logo at the begging and end of the advert and in-between this to have a hand this is opening and closing. Every time it opens there will be a different picture of someone the charity has helped fight cancer, the picture are in three different colours, red, dark blue and light blue this is so that it relates back to the Teenage Cancer Trust clours. The location of our advert is at Ravenswood School in an animation classroom.

Purpose

The purpose of our advert is to show teenagers out there that this charity is there to help them. We also want people to see this advert and to be more aware of cancer, we want to keep this advert simple but to the point, the main point is we are here t help. We are here to fight cancer with you; you are not on your own.

Key Content

The length of our animation is 20 seconds. In these twenty second we have a hand openg and closing and every time the hand closes and opens a new picture is there, we want this to seem as though the person had cancer the charity has helped them and now they have overcome cancer. We have a variety of shots in our animation. The shots we have is a close up at the begging and end of our animation that is a close up of the logo and for the rest of the animation we have an eagle eye over view tilted shot of the animation/set.

Monday 10 June 2013

character sketches

In my final animation piece, we do not use any type or form of characters. Our animation just consist of a hand opening and closing with pictures appearing of people who our charity has helped over the years. We use cut out pictures to do this. We use cut outs for not only our pictures but our logo and charity name. We felt that is we used characters in our advert then it would appeal to our target audience thats why we have chosen to just use cuts outs with a moving hand, to look more professional.

Target Audience research and analysis1

We thought that by creating a survey for a wide variety of people would help narrow down our target audience, although it may seem obvious that our charity is Teenage Cancer Trust that our target audience would mainly be teenagers, however some of the responses i received back from by survey by people a lot older, i found out that different age groups find it beneficial to see what the charity actually do. I think it is very useful for people of all different ages to see exactly what the charity do to raise money for these teenagers.

Team meeting minutes

Team Meeting Minutes.

When creating our animation, myself and rest of the team decided to arrange team meetings in which we would decide exactly what we would do for our animation step by step as we had many aspects we had to consider for part of our animation production.

28/09/2012- This was our first team meeting all together. This is where we decided exactly what charity we would base our animation on, we then began to do basic research on our chosen charity and watched other adverts and commercials the charity had previously done.
We also thought it would be a good idea to research our target audience as well, we realised that although the cancer trust is for teenagers it is also watched by all different kinds of age groups.

9/10/2012- In this meeting we gathered all our current research together to see what we had come up with. On this day we also decided to base our advert on an inspiration video(advert) wish is Mosshi Monster made for moo.com. We chose to base our idea on this advert as it looked very professional and would be easy to do. We then each took a storyboard home to feel in of one of ideas in which we could use for our animation, we would then meet up the following day to show each other our different ideas.

18/10/2012- We decided in this meeting that we would chose our final idea, so that it would be fair we would use parts of everyones storyboard to put together our final animation. We came up with the idea of an opening and closing hand, when the palm was open their would be a picture of someone who the chariety has helped, this picture would change everytime the hand opened and closed. We felt that this was a very creative idea and would be entertaining for our target audience.

4/12/2012- In this meeting we decided exactly what equipment we was going to use and how we were going to budget our animation. We also decided what sound we were going to use behind our animation which would be 'Fix You' by Coldplay. We also decided that we were going to use a Nikon D5100 camera to take the individual shots instead of using a logic camera, we chose to do this to make our animation look a lot more professional and to have high quality pictures.

After these meeting we basically began to gradually prepare for our final filming for our animation.
I felt that with the help of these meeting it made us feel a lot organized as a group and we were able to stay on top when filming our final animation.

Interview questions

-How does it feel to be known as a celebrity?

As an opening question i feel that this is a very strong question due to that fact he will open up to us right at the beginning about how he is well known for being the only blind personal trainer in the UK.

-What made you become a personal trainer?

This question allows james to not only outline but also go into depth about his past and how he became a personal trainer. this is a powerful question to ask as some people would find this question emotional as some people don't like to talk about there past, but we decided to ask this question as we know that james wouldn't take any offense to it and is comfortable to talk about his past with us.

-What do you like most about being a personal trainer?

This to me is not our most strongest question as i feel that our response will be very typical in him just explaining that he enjoys exercise and it gives him something to achieve what many people would think a man with no sight could do.

-What’s been the biggest challenge about being a personal trainer?

This is just a question we feel would be good to put into our interview as it gives James a chance to talk about his goals and struggles about being a personal trainer, although this is a chilled question it also gives James the chance to tell us a lot more about his personal training life.

-How old were you when you when you lost your sight?

This is a very powerful questions as it is a sensitive question to ask someone when they have had a serious illness like James has, but by previously meeting with james we found out that james doesn't mind talking about how he lost his sight therefore this question to james isn't a very sensitive question to ask.

-How long did it take to you adjust to being blind?

This to me isn't a very strong question to ask, its actully a very good question to ask james as it will allow james to feel relaxed after the last question we asked him.

-You’re very involved in the charity Save the Children, have you got any major events planned for the future?

This isn't a powerful question to ask james its actually the complete opposite this question is a great question to show people who are watching out interview that you can do anything you want in life as long as you put your mind to it.

-Have you set your self any goals to complete in your life?

This question is a nice question to ask james as it gives james a chance to show people what a blind person can do and it will show people that the fact he is blind wont stop him doing anything in life.

-Will you ever let the fact that you are blind stop you doing anything?

This again lets james show people that as long as you stay strong mentally you can achieve and do anything you want in life. Therefore this question isn't powerful at all only in the sense of the message james is putting out.

- What inspiring advice would you give to someone who has recently lost their vision?

This again lets james show people who have recently lost there sight not to give up no matter what. the only powefull thing in this question is the message that james is sending out.

We believe that all these questions were perfect to get a entertaining interview. We was pleased with our new questions and we are now prepared to go ahead and film our interview. The other thing we like about our new questions is that, knowing james from previous meetings we know that he can go off topic sometimes which in this case is good as we can go on and elaborate on the answer and aske questions from that,.
